Classic watercolour follows rigid rules, such as always working from light to dark. But what exactly does this mean and is it possible to work from dark to light instead? This fascinating workshop will highlight some contemporary painting methods to break away from traditional approaches that can stifle creativity. In this workshop you will be inspired to use paint expressively, how and when to use white paint, working dark to light and how, why and when to use black. As you put old watercolour rules into the history books, your painting will begin to take on a new look.
About the Artist
Paul Talbot-Greaves is a professional landscape painter who works in both watercolour and acrylic. His work reflects the rugged scenery of the landscape, either in the context of wild places or in the nature of the South Pennine landscape where he lives. He draws inspiration from the remains of the pre-industrial era where crumbling enclosure walls and ancient pastures still survive. It is this or the open mountain and moorland terrain that inspires him to explore the spirit of historical connections using layers of colour, texture, shapes and patterns applied with energy and feeling.
Paul is a regular feature writer for The Artist magazine and has four practical art books published to date as well as contributing to many others. Throughout his painting life he has been made a Companion of the International Guild of Artists, an Associate of the British Watercolour Society, a Professional Associate and advisory panellist of the SAA, president of the Halifax Art Society, as well as an advisory panellist for Artists and Illustrators magazine. He has exhibited with the RI in London and have twice been selected for the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition.
Watercolour paint – preferably tubes (including Winsor Newton Neutral Tint or Daler Rowney Payne’s Grey and Winsor newton permanent white gouache)
Cotton watercolour paper such as Saunders Waterford or Arches. (please feel free to work on the size you feel most comfortable with)
Watercolour brushes including a squirrel mop brush for best effects
Other acessories including a palette, water pot, water misting spray, kitchen roll or tissue, pencil (4B or 6B), soft eraser, masking tape
You will also need to bring along a photograph or two to work from. These can be of any subject but for best effect, try to use pictures that contain a good balance of light and dark values.

Minimum numbers apply for courses to run. Payment is due in full at the time of booking, either through the shop, phone or online. All sales are final unless transferring to another class in which a difference in price will be paid. Full refunds will be given if the courses cannot take place. If you cannot make the classes for any reason no refunds will be given.

Refreshments are available all day (tea, coffee, biscuits etc.) and there will be a lunch break of approximately one hour.
There are plenty of local shops and cafes in the area within close walking distance to the arcade.

The nearest car park available to the venue is the multi-storey next to Huddersfield bus station. All details are found on the link below. The cost of the car park is £2.00 for 3 hours (all levels) or £4.00 for 10 hours (upper two levels only).
Our venue is also a 2 minute walk from both the main bus and train stations.
